What a nice day!
Today I received a letter from Finland! And haiku!
Und nun sitze ich hier ... Und übersetze ...
And now I sit here and I try to translate ..
syksy majassani --
kylmä päivä
kylmä yö
(Issa; in: Kogarashi, S. 28, editor: Juhani Tikkanen)
autumn (but what means majassani?) --
cold day
cold night
Herbst (majassani ?) --
kalter Tag
kalte Nacht
a day later:
I still look for "majassani" -- perhaps Juhani will comment, then we will know ...

maja/ssa/ni, main word is maja = cottage, a small house etc

ReplyDeleteHow would you translate Issa´s haiku into English?
Nearly every Issa's haiku are in Internet, URL http://haikuguy.com/issa/. Translations are in English, and there are also the original texts in Japanese. When translating those into Finnish I can check the lines, and some words also when the English translation doesn't sound so good :-) I don't understand Japanese so much, but there are many words I understand. Japanese grammar is also simply and 'poetic' in my opinion.

我庵や夜寒昼寒さて是は
waga io ya yozamu hiru samu sate kore wa
at my hut
cold nights, cold days...
ah well
This one was from:
(Year 1822)
草の家は秋も昼寒夜寒哉
kusa no ya wa aki mo hiru samu yozamu kana

Extremely simple. And so very nice.
'In the hut' Issa doesn't say that it is 'his' hut, but of course it is. I added it in my Finnish translation, perhaps it was a small mistake?
L1 corrected: "syksy majassa"
